3-Day Great Migration and Calving Season Experience in Serengeti
Offered by - Tiem Tours And Safaris
Tour Features
Embark on a 3-day safari during the calving season in the Serengeti is an unforgettable experience, as this is one of the most exciting times to visit. The calving season typically occurs between January and March, when around 8,000 wildebeest calves are born each day, along with other herbivores such as zebras and gazelles. This period provides extraordinary opportunities for wildlife sightings, including predator-prey interactions.

Arrival (See Getting There for more details)
- A transfer from the airport can be arranged for an extra cost.
- Accommodation before the tour starts can be arranged for an extra cost.
- Day 1 - DAY 1: ARUSHA TO SERENGETI NATIONAL PARKMorning: Depart from Arusha early in the morning (around 6:00 AM) to begin your drive to the Serengeti. The journey will take about 5-6 hours, so be prepared for a long but scenic trip. Afternoon: Arrive in the Serengeti in the afternoon and head directly to the central Serengeti area (Seronera). This area is known for its wildlife activity and will be a great starting point to experience the calving season. Go on an afternoon game drive, where you'll see wildebeest herds, newborn calves, and potentially predators (lions, cheetahs, hyenas) drawn to the vulnerable young animals. Highlights: Observe the vulnerable young calves, the excitement of the predator-prey dynamics, and the vast plains filled with animals. It’s an ideal place to witness lion, cheetah, and hyena activity around the herds. Evening: Check into your accommodation (lodge or camp) within or near the Serengeti. Enjoy a bush dinner or a sundowner in the evening as you recount the day's safari experiences.
Meals & Drinks: Meals included as per itinerary
- Day 2 - DAY 2: SOUTH SERENGETI AND NDUTU REGIONMorning: After breakfast, head toward the Ndutu region in the southern Serengeti. This area is one of the best places to witness the calving season as the wildebeest gather in massive herds to give birth. Midday: Spend time exploring the herds and witnessing the calving process. You’ll also likely spot predators (like lions, cheetahs, and jackals) waiting to catch an unsuspecting calf. Highlights: This area is also known for its birdlife, so be sure to keep an eye out for birds of prey like eagles and vultures that often follow the action. Afternoon: Continue your exploration of the area, observing the interaction between the herbivores and their predators. Evening: Head back to camp or lodge for an evening meal and relaxation. You may opt for a night game drive if your camp offers it.
Meals & Drinks: Meals included as per itinerary
- Day 3 - DAY 3: GAME DRIVES AND DEPARTUREMorning: Enjoy your last early morning game drive before heading back to Arusha. The early morning hours are perfect for spotting big cats in action, as this is when they're most active. Visit Seronera or surrounding areas for your final opportunity to see wildebeest, calves, and perhaps even cubs hunting their first prey. Highlights: By now, you’ll have witnessed a range of calving activity and predator-prey dynamics. Look for cheetah families, lion prides, and hyena clans, all of which tend to be more active during this period. Midday: Have an early lunch at your lodge or on the go. Afternoon: Depart the Serengeti in the early afternoon, and begin the drive back to Arusha. You should arrive in the evening, depending on traffic and stops along the way.
Meals & Drinks: Meals included as per itinerary
