St Francis Xavier, a founding member of Jesus society visited Malindi in 1542, and buried one of his sea men at the chapel, on his way to India. Also the colonial governor, Mr. J Bell Smith, was buried there. Next we head to the Malindi Museum for a chance to learn more of this historic town. This is followed by a tour of Malindi Maasai Market for a chance to buy some African jewerelly, souvenirs, and paintings among other items. You will also get a chance to walk to other local shops for local attires. Next we drive to Gede Ruins for a historic tour. A guided tour to a local Giriama village where you will be welcomed by local traditional songs and even get a chance to dance, get a closer contact with the people going about their daily lives activities, “African way of life”, visit a local medicine man get to know the various medicinal herbs and charms used for generations. Proceed into the ruins where you begin by a brief on the history. The remains of a Swahili town whose origin dates back to the 12th century, the Gede historical monument is one of the most popular attractions on Kenya’s coast. The town became wealthy and reached its peak in the 15th century. Visible today are the remains of a magnificent palace, mosques, and large houses made from stone and coral reefs. Early in the 16th century the town was mysteriously abandoned and is now home to hundreds of guenon monkeys. Under the care of the National Museums of Kenya, it is more than just an important archaeological site. Gede’s indigenous forest is a sacred site for traditional rituals and sacrifices for the surrounding community. After a wonderful time, we proceed for lunch at the crab shack, run by the Mida Creek conservation community and ideal for a relaxed meal in a rustic setting or drinks whilst watching the creek. Mida Creek, a Broadwater tidal creek surrounded by extensive mangroves and lined with palms is where we end a wonderful tour. We will depart for Malindi and on arrival, drop off at your residence/hotel.

Getting There

Tourists can visit these safari locations once in Kenya and can show up via air, land or ocean, however, flights are the most favoured mode of transport. Kenya is a huge nation and while you can go via vehicle on a safari circuit, getting between the various regions is better on a booked flight.
Kenya's main airport is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), located 15km/9mi southeast of Nairobi. Kenya's second international Airport is Moi International Airport (MBA), located 9km/6mi west of Mombasa, but aside from flights to Zanzibar, this is primarily used for domestic and charter flights.
From Nairobi or Mombasa, one can fly or drive between reserves, or opt to do a bit of both. Most domestic flights out of Nairobi depart from Wilson Airport (WIL), 6km/4mi south of Nairobi.
